While daily core content instruction is essential, so is targeted instruction. Targeted instruction entails intensive instruction in a set of transferable skills. For this lesson, students were mentored on transferable reading skills. Specifically, on how to describe a character in depth, events in the story, and themes, while referencing text evidence. One lesson lasted two to three days, providing an opportunity for at least two lessons per week.
